How Housemates Supported Childbirth and Parenting: Miki at Organic (Part 2)

In Part 2, Miki shares how residents cared for her older daughter while she gave birth, how housemates helped during difficult parenting moments, and the challenges of balancing children’s routines with an active shared home.

When Housemates Became Family

Support on the Day Her Baby Was Born

Before giving birth, Miki discussed what might happen if labor began in the middle of the night. In the end, a friend collected her older daughter from nursery school, and Organic residents ate dinner with her. Housemates from other WARAI buildings also came, and about ten adults spent the evening with the child.

After the birth, they sent Miki a video of everyone singing “Hello, Baby.” She felt deeply grateful and certain that these people had become family.

Help When Parenting Felt Overwhelming

One day Miki had nothing ready for dinner and asked the house group chat whether anyone could share a side dish. Every resident brought something, and one person came over to cook spaghetti Napolitan.

Another night, her daughter developed ear pain. A housemate drove them to an emergency hospital at 9 p.m. on a Saturday and waited through the appointment. Experiences like these convinced Miki that parenting becomes easier when more caring adults are nearby.

The Challenge of Different Daily Rhythms

Shared living is not without difficulty. Miki’s daughter loves the residents and sometimes stays awake too late after a house meeting. Parents may want to join evening conversations while also needing to protect a child’s bedtime. Her family now tries to begin gatherings earlier.

Children Change the House, Too

A housemate told Miki that share-house life made it possible to live around children without having children herself. Another former resident said that watching family life up close changed how she thought about marriage and parenting.

Miki is glad if her family’s presence creates something positive for others. Shared living gives people a realistic view of daily life with children, and that exchange can benefit everyone.
